POOL BOY SYNOPSIS
Knowing her friend Devon is in need of a job, his best friend Lyra suggests he take a job as pool boy with her former employers, Cara and Richard Johnson. According to Lyra, the Johnsons are a strange but wealthy couple who may be harboring secrets. Having stolen from them when she worked as their housekeeper, Lyra wonders whether Devon, who is deaf, may be able to learn some of their secrets by reading their lips when they don't think he's paying attention and even whether he might be able to break into their family safe after gaining their trust as pool boy.
After being hired as their pool boy, Devon begins to build a relationship with the Johnsons, especially Richard. Cara quickly catches on to the attraction between Richard and Devon, but allows them to grow even closer despite her concerns. One night, when Cara is out with some friends, Richard lures Devon into the guest bedroom where their affair begins. Quickly, Devon falls for Richard, whose looks, wealth, and power seduce the young boy. When Cara finally confronts Devon about his affair with her husband, she is understanding rather than angry. She knows her husband's physique and romantic style appeal to many people of all genders. Why else, she asks, would she have married him in the first place? As their discussion continues, Cara offers to introduce Devon, who writes screenplays, to her influential friends in the entertainment industry in exchange for a simple request...poisoning Richard. Having completely fallen for Richard, Devon shares Cara's request with Richard, who is not surprised to learn of his wife's murderous intentions. It's clear to Richard that, in order for Devon and he to have a future, they must dispose of Cara. Opening the safe that Lyra had described, Richard pulls out a gun and asks Devon to shoot his wife. Together, they will make her murder look like a home invasion gone awry. Initially refusing to participate in either Cara's or Richard's plans, Devon learns from his mother Angela that their financial problems are worse than he ever imagined. They are in danger of losing their home. When Devon shares with Lyra all that has occurred with Cara and Richard, she advises her friend to protect himself and get out of the situation immediately, even though she secretly has plans of her own. Desperate to help his mother financially, Devon reluctantly decides to execute Richard's plan. Thinking Richard and Cara are attending a fundraiser, Devon enters their house and breaks into the safe. In addition to finding the gun, he also finds a mysterious DVD labeled "Lyra." Immediately viewing the DVD, Devon learns that Cara and Lyra had an affair that ended when Lyra refused to help Cara murder Richard. Stunned by what he has just learned, Devon is distracted when he hears someone in the hallway outside the bedroom. Gun in hand, he heads down the hallway to the Johnsons' primary bedroom, where he finds a woman hovered over the night table. Assuming it's Cara, Devon shoots her. As the woman falls to the ground, Devon is shocked to see that he has, in fact, shot and killed Lyra. As her body hits the floor, a bottle of pills falls from her hand. Cara and Richard enter the room, pleased that their true intentions have played out. They ridicule Devon for killing Lyra and celebrate the death of their former housekeeper whom they knew all along had stolen from them. After drinking a celebratory cocktail taken from the night table, Richard begins to convulse. As he falls to the ground, Devon realizes that Lyra had poisoned the drink, intending to kill Cara. When Richard dies, Devon looks down at the two bodies resting at his feet. Triumphantly, Clara orders Devon to clean up "the mess," mentioning that there's a shovel in the shed outside. She leaves the room as Devon cries over the bodies of two people he loved. |
