SINGLE AT CHRISTMAS SYNOPSIS
After a breakup with his boyfriend Ted, Giovanni Rossi and his best friend Marci Morgan have dinner and agree it's best to be "single at Christmas." Marci takes the stage during the restaurant's "open mic" and wows the room with her singing voice. Their table server Javier Garcia compliments her and invites her to sing another Christmas song.
An elementary school teacher, Gio gives his students a Christmas writing assignment. While the students work, Gio overhears Eddie and Lucy express their excitement for the upcoming Christmas concert. After school, Gio visits Marci at her coffee shop. When his principal Clint Anderson enters the store, Gio introduces him to Marci. Gio notices the immediate attraction between the two, but Marci insists she has no interest in dating. As Gio leaves the shop, he nearly bumps into Javier, who has seen the "help wanted" sign in the window. When Javi arrives home later, he is greeted by his sister Carmen and her son Eddie, with whom he has been living since Carmen's husband passed away a few years earlier. The next day during class, Lucy makes a comment about Eddie's father. Upset, Eddie runs out of the room. When Gio finds him sitting alone, Eddie says how much he misses his father, especially at Christmastime. Concerned, Gio contacts Carmen and asks her to meet with him; however, when Carmen has to work late, she sends Javi to the meeting in her place. Javi arrives at Gio's classroom and they immediately recognize each other from the restaurant where Marci sang. They have a long conversation about Eddie and also get to know each other. When Marci and Gio get together to bake Christmas cookies, Gio shares an old recipe that belonged to his mother, with whom he has not spoken in years. Marci loves the cookies and asks if she can sell them at her shop. Gio agrees. A few days later, Gio stops by the shop to see how the cookies are selling and is surprised to learn Javi now works for Marci. Then Clint arrives and reveals that Loretta Lawrence, the school's music teacher, has broken her hip and will be out of school until after the holidays. Clint is desperate to find a replacement for Loretta because the students' Christmas concert is only a few days away. After some encouragement from Gio, Marci offers to step in for Loretta and help with the concert. As Christmas approaches, Clint and Marci spend more time together as do Gio and Javi. In fact, Gio shares with Javi the reason why his mother and he no longer talk. Feeling confident in his connection with Gio, Javi decides to ask him on a date. When Gio is leaving school, he finds Ted standing in the parking lot. Ted tells Gio that breaking up was a big mistake and that he wants to get back together. Ted gives Gio a hug just as Javi arrives to ask Gio out. Unnoticed, Javi witnesses Ted's embrace and leaves the school utterly disappointed. Having no idea Javi was ever there, Gio rejects Ted and declares that he is now interested in someone far more special. Feeling rejected, Javi stops taking Gio's calls. Carmen notices her brother's sadness, but Javi will not share what's wrong. Under Marci's direction, the Christmas concert is a huge success. As part of the finale, Marci performs a solo. After the concert, Lucy introduces Marci to her uncle, a music producer interested in helping her music career. Gio's repeated attempts to talk to Javi after the performance fail, but as he is about to head home, Gio is stunned by a woman standing at the back of the venue: his mother. Gio's mother Marilyn reveals that she came to seek out her son after receiving a phone call from Javi. Tears in his eyes, Gio rushes out to find Javi. Standing in the falling snow, Javi says that he knows about Ted; however, Gio quickly clarifies that Javi has jumped to inaccurate conclusions. They finally share a warm embrace as Marilyn watches from a distance. Together, Gio, Javi, Marilyn, Carmen, Marci, Clint, and Eddie spend Christmas Eve together with a new understanding that maybe it's not best to be single at Christmas. |
